Join us as three New York University recipients of Société’s Summer Student Research Fellowships discuss their projects. A 30-minute networking session will follow the student presentations.

Marc Reisch, Société Education Committee Chair, will moderate the presentations.


Meet the Presenters:

Masha
Masha Khartikova is a rising NYU senior and biochemistry major. She has been conducting research in the Nudler lab at NYU Langone for the past two years where her studies look at the different proteins that participate in transcription-coupled repair and the way they work together to ensure harmful mutations are not copied over to the next generations of cells.

Her presentation focuses on characterizing protein complexes involved in transcription-coupled nucleotide excision repair between the RNA polymerase and protein UvrA in E. coli via ex-vivo cryo-electronmicroscopy.


AWilliam
Alex William is a rising senior majoring in Chemistry at NYU where he has been conducting research in the Rothenberg lab for the past year investigating the use of DNA-damaging treatments in human cancer cell lines.

His project is focused on expanding the lab’s workflow for assessing the use of DNA-damaging treatments in human cancer cell lines beyond standard cell survival assays. He and his lab colleagues sought to accomplish this by building a platform to incorporate live-cell imaging into the assessment of treatment potency and further developing our procedure for assessing drug-DNA binding interactions.


Ming
Ming Yu graduated summa cum laude from the NYU College of Arts and Science with a B.A. in Biochemistry this past spring after completing his honors thesis. He is an aspiring physician-investigator currently applying to medical school with plans to remain involved in biochemical research.

For the past two years, he has conducted research in the Wosczyna Lab studying muscle-resident mesenchymal stromal cells and how they change with aging. His work focuses on biochemically and functionally characterizing cell sub-populations defined by mitochondrial heterogeneity, with the goal of identifying populations that may disproportionately contribute to age-related declines in their ability to support muscle regeneration.
